In a recent correspondence with me, the owner of the painting refers to it in the following way:

"It's funny, but The Dreamer, as I call her, has become very personal to me. You may recall that she is in my office, and I have long conversations with her: she has become a friend and confidant. Her expression seems to change with my moods and I find it quite relaxing to come in here and have a chat, moan, talk things over etc. She has such an enigmatic expression and I sometimes think she finds me amusing when I'm being silly or understanding when I have a problem.”
