ECCE HOMO

2010
Painting by Valery Koroshilov
Oil on linen, 100 x 100 cm

Artists & Illustrators Magazine (UK) has voted “Ecce Homo” the overall winner of The Artist of the Year Competition 2010. Featured in September 2010 issue, p.33

The idea of this picture originates from my intention to pay a tribute to Andrea Mantegna, whose relatively small painting Ecce Homo, ca. 1500, now in Paris (previous image), made a great impression on me. Following Mantegna’s compositional structure, I nevertheless reduced the religious content to a mere symbolism, and focused instead on expressing the subtleties of the human emotion. My seven-year old son Philip acted as a model.
